Cargotec celebrates the foundation of its new multi-assembly unit in Poland

Cargotec celebrates today the establishment of a new multi-assembly unit (MAU) in Stargard Szczecinski in Northern Poland.  The foundation stone ceremony for the new multi-assembly unit is hosted by Cargotec's President and CEO Mr. Mikael Mäkinen. Secretary of State Mr. Rafal Baniak from the Ministry of Economy is invited as the guest of honour in the event. The new MAU plays an important part in Cargotec's long-term global supply strategy with an ideal location to serve the European markets as well as lower the production and transportation costs and to strengthen the sourcing activities in Central Eastern Europe. "We are proud of our investment and pleased to take this step in building the most modern and energy-efficient assembly unit within the corporation, says Mr. Mäkinen".

Cargotec announced the investment plan concerning the new assembly unit in April this year. The purchase of 41 hectares of land was finalised in June 2009 and the construction of the assembly unit is proceeding on schedule. The production is planned to start during the second quarter in 2010 and will then accommodate some 200 employees. The new unit will support the production of a wide range of Cargotec's cargo handling equipment. "Being present in the Stargard Szczecinski area offers excellent road and waterway connections to our markets in Europe, says Axel Leijonhufvud, Cargotec's Executive Vice President, Product Supply. "We are also very pleased about the good and fruitful cooperation we have had with the local government".

 

During this year Cargotec will already start assembly in rented facilities in the Goleniów region in Poland. The first products planned to be assembled in rented facilities are spreaders and medium range terminal tractors.

 

Cargotec has been active in supporting the cooperation and research to improve the state of the Baltic Sea since the beginning of 2007. Earlier this year Cargotec made a commitment to set environmental targets and to participate in the Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS), which will be organised in Helsinki in 2010 to offer a platform for heads of state, companies, business leaders, NGOs and individual citizens to contribute to the well-being of the Baltic Sea.

 

Cargotec has defined environmental targets for the different phases of the supply chain: beginning from the purchasing and logistics of incoming components and ending to the actual products and their appropriate usage. "We have specified the following concrete target levels: logistical effectiveness, energy-efficient production, sustainable products and services and training to efficient and energy-saving usage of the products", says Mr. Mäkinen. "For our assembly factory in Poland this means, that we plan to have a carbon neutral heating solution and are studying alternative energy sources for electricity. The waste-water treatment plants are also designed in cooperation with the best service providers from the sustainability viewpoint", he continues.
